Good corporate citizenship is a fundamental element and inherent characteristic of the cooperative and mutual insurance sector. Established from the need to provide financial security and prosperity to communities and individuals, cooperative and mutual insurers have a long history of responsibility to society.
Such responsibilities are today recognised as core to Corporate Social Responsibility, or CSR, and viewed as a must for all companies, whatever their legal form, if they wish to win the hearts and minds as well as the business of the wider public. Hand in hand with this is sustainability—a forward-looking approach that incorporates CSR activities, to make sure the way in which organisations are run does not endanger the future of the planet, at a local, national, regional, or global level.
A key part of CSR and sustainability programmes is to ensure all stakeholders, the public and the media are aware of the company’s efforts. Reporting of such activities is increasingly important, requiring integrity and professionalism.
It is more than a public relations exercise; it is an opportunity to make clear the company’s ethos, and demonstrate how its values align to those of policyholders and society.
Within ICMIF, a number of members are conducting full CSR and/or sustainability reporting and examples can be downloaded by ICMIF registered members.
