The future of the planet appears fragile; there is clear and credible evidence that the world’s resources—already limited—are diminishing at a rate which if left unchecked will result in the destruction of the environment.

Small wonder then, that the subject of sustainability is receiving increased focus and resources around the globe from governments, non-government organisations (NGOs), businesses, other stakeholder groups, academics, and the public.

It is imperative that all organisations, including cooperative and mutual insurers, rise to the challenge and embrace sustainable practices in their thinking, planning, and actions.

A natural synergy exists between the ideals of sustainability and the values of cooperative and mutual insurers. ICMIF is already working closely with its members to map out a blueprint of what a sustainable cooperative or mutual insurer of the future could look like. The output from this initiative will assist ICMIF members in articulating their own strategies in moving towards organisational sustainability.
