New Zealand mutual insurer and ICMIF member MAS has been recognised with three Most Satisfied Customers Awards in Canstar’s 2025 Insurance Awards, reinforcing the organisation’s strong reputation for service and member focus.
The insurer, which is a member of the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF), took out top honours in Home and Contents Insurance, Car Insurance and Seniors Insurance – the only provider among 17 major insurance brands featured in Canstar’s research to achieve five-star ratings in multiple ratings categories across all three awards.
The awards are based on feedback from more than 6,400 New Zealand consumers and measure satisfaction across key areas including customer service, value for money, communication, comprehensiveness of cover, and overall satisfaction.
As a member-owned mutual, MAS operates for the benefit of its members rather than external shareholders. Chief General Insurance Officer Chris Sutherland said the recognition demonstrates the value of the mutual model.
“Winning one Canstar Customer Satisfaction Award is a great achievement, but to earn three is a reflection of the hard work our teams put in every day to ensure our members receive insurance and service that’s reliable, comprehensive and delivers real value,” Sutherland said. “To be rated number one by the people who matter most – our members – is a huge honour.”
The achievement highlights the continued relevance of mutual insurers within the wider insurance market. By prioritising long-term value and service over short-term shareholder returns, MAS has strengthened trust among its members and distinguished itself from larger corporate competitors.
For ICMIF, MAS’s success serves as another example of how cooperative and mutual insurers worldwide are delivering customer-centric solutions in an increasingly competitive sector.
