European Mutual Market Share 2026

PUBLICATION

European mutual and cooperative insurers continued to demonstrate resilience in 2024, achieving 7.3% total annual premium growth, comprising a 6.7% increase in life insurance and 7.8% growth in non‑life business, reflecting a broad recovery in economic activity, easing inflationary pressures, and sustained demand for both savings and protection products.

This performance is particularly notable given the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, elevated energy costs, and rising climate‑related catastrophe risks across Europe. In this environment, households, businesses, and communities increasingly turned to mutual insurers for reliable, member‑driven protection.

Over the five‑year period to 2024, mutual insurers achieved 21.7% cumulative premium growth, consisting of a 16.0% increase in life insurance and 26.6% growth in non‑life business. The sector’s comparatively stronger long‑term performance in life insurance underscores the enduring trust placed in member‑focused savings and retirement solutions across key European markets.
