Preparing your most valuable employees for the challenges that lie ahead in their careers is critical to the future success of your organisation. The HPC is specifically designed for mutual/cooperative insurers to help equip their managers, technical specialists, high potential employees and those deemed to be future leaders with a range of tools to help them make sound judgements as their jobs become increasingly complex. This two and a half day course gives participants very valuable insights into how the mutual/cooperative business model can drive competitive advantage. Featuring the acclaimed AGILE insurance simulation, this course will provide your employees with a highly interactive and challenging learning experience that will help them to enhance their performance and think differently. As well as gaining a more complete understanding of how mutual/cooperative insurers operate and compete, participants will develop alternate points of view by working with their peers from similar insurers from around the world. Crucially, they will be given time to extract the learning from this experience that will help them to make sound judgements in the face of increasing complexity back in the workplace. Who should attend? This course is aimed at employees whose jobs are becoming increasingly complex. A purpose built flow that enables participants to move several times a day from acquiring the theory to practicing in the simulation; discussing issues with peers; and making notes on how they will apply their learning in the future. Course contentAdditional detail on the course content The modules of the 2019 HPC are: Module 1: Getting to know each other … and yourself By helping your fellow participants to understand your role and the challenges you face, you will be able to explore common issues with your fellow participants from different organisational cultures. In the process you will better understand yourself and your own automatic behaviour that is likely to be invisible to you Just as fish don’t know they’re in water, people often find it difficult to see and recognise their habitual ways of working until they start comparing them with others. Our learned patterns of behaviour and the beliefs that have built up as a consequence of our experience frequently impact our perceptions (what we see), cognitions (what we think), and actions (what we do). By discussing and contrasting your approaches with international peers from other mutual insurers, you will learn to recognise your own default responses: making visible the automatic behaviours that may previously have been invisible to you. Tool: Erin Meyer’s Culture Map Module 2: Understanding the difference between technical and complex challenges Understanding the difference between technical challenges that involve applying well-honed skills to well-defined problems (such as pricing a standard risk) and complex challenges that are messy, open-ended, ill-defined and where it may even be hard to say what the right question is, let alone find an answer. Framework: How to identify and approach complex situations Module 3: Appreciating how we judge and decide As University of Toronto Professor Donald Redelmeir says, “wherever there is uncertainty there has got to be judgment, and wherever there is judgment there is an opportunity for human fallibility.” One of the features prior participants value is the opportunity to comprehend and personalise the cognitive limits that affect us all and cause human fallibility. For example, most of us believe we can process more information than research suggests we actually can. As a result, we tend to act prematurely, often making decisions without fully comprehending the likely consequences for the system. While in theory groups should make better judgements and decisions than individuals, in practice unless we know how to avoid easy-to-fall-into collaboration traps, we are easy prey to misunderstanding, circular arguments and ineffective outcomes. Framework: how groups judge and decide Tool: 3 simple steps to harnessing collective intelligence • Module 5: Conducting a healthy challenge process We may have overcome the human nature to jump into treatment mode prematurely, ie before we have adequately understood a complex situation, yet still only generate a single potential solution because our minds may trick us into sticking with our first idea even in the face of overwhelming evidence that there are superior approaches. All too often, the challenging of ideas can lead to conflict that impacts team performance. By conducting a healthy challenge process we are able to generate fresh options, refine our evaluation of those options and perform effectively and harmoniously as we do so. Tool: 3 simple challenges Tool: The Pre-mortem Module 6: Thinking more strategically Successful strategic decision making requires rational judgement and decision making within a complex system whereby a team works effectively together to overcome the pitfalls of human fallibility to judge what is true before deciding what to do. Tool: the ICMIF network Module 8: Preparing a personal learning plan to apply your learning when you return to your day job that builds on research into successful habitual change You will not only learn and practice applying the essential ingredients for thriving in complex situations, you will identify the tools and situations on which it is most important to focus your energy following the course as you maximize the return on your investment in the course by putting your learning to work. Working with your peers during the final day, you will develop a personal plan to apply the simple tools which when practiced to automaticity overcome the key barriers to rational strategic decision making. In the process you will sharpen your understanding of how habits are made and broken and the approaches research has shown transform the success rate of developing new behaviours. These approaches ensure you will emerge with a mindset shift which supports a more expansive way of thinking, a personal “stepladder” driven habit implementation and the peer support network that will enable you to resist the inevitable buffeting by work and life as you make your chosen new behaviours automatic. Framework: how habits and willpower work Tool: The implementation plan Tool: Sean Young’s Stepladder approach Practical work during the course In addition to the modules, the 2019 AMC also features the following practical work: Practicing applying learning from modules 2 to 6 by working as a team to address authentic complex situations by managing an insurance company within the AGILE insurance simulation The AGILE simulation provides the authentic practice environment where you will thrive. You will gain first-hand experience of what makes management in a complex situation harder than in a merely complicated situation. You will learn that it’s harder to predict what will happen, because complex systems interact in unexpected ways; it’s harder to exercise judgement (making sense of a situation and the odds we assign in the face of uncertainty), because the complexity may challenge the limits of how we seem think and act, and it’s harder to place bets and make decisions (what we do as a consequence of knowing or guessing those odds), because the past behaviour of a complex system may not predict its future behaviour. In the process, you will develop an appreciation that since it is very difficult, if not impossible, for an individual decision maker to see an entire complex system, tackling complex situations as a team and creating the conditions for effective collaboration becomes paramount. In the process you will enhance your overall understanding of the drivers of insurance performance. Networking with peers from other ICMIF members The learning continues beyond the course.
