Whilst on a personal level the staff of the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF) were very disappointed in the outcome of the Brexit referendum, particularly those based at the Federation’s UK office, the vote for the UK to leave the European Union will have no effect on how ICMIF provides its services to its global membership.
ICMIF is a global federation with nearly 300 member organizations in over 75 countries. ICMIF’s head office is in Manchester (UK) and there are regionally staffed offices (or regional associations) in the USA, Japan and now a permanent presence in Belgium through the recent integration with AMICE (the Association of Mutual Insurers and Insurance Cooperatives). Each regional office provides services to members in the most efficient and timely way possible, with each of the regional associations having its own governance.
The recent integration with AMICE is a very positive move towards creating a strong, integrated mutual sector, said Shaun Tarbuck, CEO, ICMIF. “This will result in greater influence for us in Europe and globally in addition to a wider range of improved, integrated services being offered to the newly combined membership in Europe,” he continued.
The integration of services and membership between ICMIF and AMICE has just started and the Brexit vote has no impact on what the organizations do and how they work for members. AMICE recently affirmed its continued close cooperation with the mutual and cooperative insurers based in the UK.
The mutual sector globally has never been in such a strong position both in business terms and in terms of its growing influence. It is ICMIF working closely together with all the regional associations that bind us together and which gives us one global voice. Our slogan sums us up perfectly ‘a global reach for local strength,’ which is as true today as it was 25 years ago when ICMIF first adopted it. The future is mutual.
