Event news: Highlights of the October 2016 International Summit of Cooperatives

Friday, 02 September 2016

The forthcoming 2016 Quebec International Summit of Cooperatives promises to be an unparalleled opportunity for both cooperatives and mutuals to network, learn and cooperate under the theme of Cooperatives: The Power to Act. The event will be co-hosted by the International Co-operative Alliance and Desjardins Group and takes place from 11 to 13 October in Quebec (Canada).

The Summit is a leading economic platform for business development in the cooperative and mutual movement. In 2014, more than 40% of the 3,000 international participants were CEOs, VPs, Board Members, Directors and Managers. Close to 10% of young professionals aged 20 to 35 from the five continents who attended the Summit did so under the Young Leaders Program.

This October Summit delegates will have the opportunity to do the following:

Review the current social, economic and geopolitical situation, and delve deep into the key factors leading to success, including innovation, working in the digital age, commitment to community, access to capital, big data and the collaborative economy.

Confirmed speakers include Robert Reich (influential Economist and former United States Secretary of Labor), Joseph E. Stiglitz (eminent Theoretician and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences), Mark R. Kramer (FSG co-Founder and shared value advocate), Jeremy Rifkin (world-renowned Economist and influential political advisor), Navi Radjou (eminent innovation and leadership advisor) and Maria Ubarretxena Cid (Mayor of the City of Mondragon), along with an impressive list of influential Chief Executive Officers and Chairpersons, such as Melina Morrison (Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals), Thierry Blandinières (InVivo), Inja Park (iCOOP Consumer Activities, iCOOP KOREA) and Shaun Tarbuck (the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation, ICMIF), to name but a few.

Discuss sectoral challenges and opportunities in the following areas: Agriculture and Agri-Food Industries, Banking and Financial Services, Insurance, Health and Social Services, Wholesale and Retail Trade, Industry, Services and Energy and Forestry.

ICMIF has been responsible for organizing the sectoral sessions on insurance which take place on Wednesday 12 October between 2.15 and 5.15pm. These sessions will focus on the theme of Increasing the recognition and influence of cooperative insurance: A key to global socioeconomic stability and will feature 11 expert speakers from both the Federation and its member organizations.

The ICMIF sessions will look at how insurance cooperatives and mutuals stand at the forefront of delivering socioeconomic stability and environmental sustainability on a global scale. Insurance cooperatives and mutuals have the risk knowledge to help protect lives and communities. They have the financial assets to support sustainable development. They have a business model based on financial inclusion, delivering benefits to the many, rather than making profit for the few. All the benefits of these traits are now more broadly recognized by policymakers, media and consumers, but there is more work to be done. In this session, ICMIF speakers and roundtable participants will look at the ways in which the cooperative and mutual difference – from governance, through member engagement, to product development, innovation and more – provides cooperatives and mutuals with the tools to influence perceptions and increase economic possibilities for the sector.
