Member representatives for the UK's largest mutual healthcare organization and ICMIF member, Benenden Healthcare Society, have voted to open up the organization to the wider public.

Until now membership of the 107 year old Benenden Healthcare was only available to current or former public sectors workers as well as members of credit unions, co-operatives and charities.

At the Society’s Annual Conference in Manchester on Thursday, June 21, delegates voted to allow any UK resident, aged 16 or over, to join the Society and benefit from its mutual, not-for-profit ethos. This represents a major leap forward for the organisation,...

A major global initiative to encourage sustainable insurance practices, overseen by the UN’s Environment Programme UNEP, received its official launch in, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, yesterday with the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF) confirmed as a founding supporting institution.

ICMIF is represented on the team which is overseeing the development of The Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) and one of the Federation’s members, The Co-operators (Canada), has committed to be a founding signatory.

The results of groundbreaking international studies will be revealed for the first time at the 2012 International Summit of Cooperatives being held in Quebec City, Canada, from October 8 to 11.

These studies document and expand on what we know about cooperatives and mutuals in economic and business terms. Very few studies have been done on the cooperative movement, and this research establishes historic milestones in the quantitative and qualitative analysis of cooperatives and their impact on the global economy. The studies will help demonstrate that this model is a solid, reliable solution to current and future crises.

An Argentinean member of ICMIF, San Cristóbal Seguros Generales, has donated a fully equipped ambulance to the Argentinean municipality of Santa Fe. This donation forms part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity of the San Cristóbal Seguros Generales organisation.

The presentation of the ambulance was made during a formal ceremony which was attended by the General Manager of San Cristóbal Seguros Generales, Eduardo Sangermano; the Mayor of the City of Santa Fe, Jose Corral; and the Minister of Health of the province of Santa Fe, Miguel Angel Capiello; along with other local authorities.

The second International Cooperative Alliance for the Americas (ICA-Americas) Summit took place recently (May 28 to June 1) in Panama City, Panama, in celebration of the International Year of Co-operatives. The theme of the summit was ‘Sustainable Development with Social Equity in the Co-operative Model’ and it had almost 1,000 international and local participants.

During the UN International Year of Cooperatives 2012 the web site will help to deliver the UN’s message “Cooperative enterprises build a better world” to the global public by telling a unique story every day about cooperatives from all around the world throughout 2012.

One of ICMIF’s Supporting Members, A.M. Best, has opened an office in Miami, Florida to serve the growing market for insurance ratings in the Latin American region. Earlier this year, A.M. Best also opened an office in Dubai, UAE. Miami is A.M. Best's fifth global office location.

Jorge A. Gonzalez has been appointed to manage the Miami office. Gonzalez is an insurance and reinsurance veteran who has worked and resided in Latin America and Miami for decades. The Miami office will be used for management meetings and other activities focused on the Latin American (re)insurance markets.

Puerto Rican cooperative insurer and member of ICMIF, Seguros Múltiples, has launched a mobile application “Text U Later” in cooperation with the Commission for Traffic Safety in Puerto Rico, to educate and warn people about the dangers of using mobile phones while driving. With this application the insurance cooperative allows drivers to avoid unnecessary distractions which could cause a traffic accident.
