MD of Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction to headline global mutual reinsurance conference

Manchester, UK, 26 February 2018: The International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF) today announced that a keynote speakers for its upcoming Meeting of Reinsurance Officials (MORO) in Montreal, Canada, in April will be Glenn McGillivray, Managing Director of the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR). The MORO Conference will take place 23-25 April 2018 and this year’s theme is Reinsuring the mutual way.

McGillivray will present an overview of the catastrophic loss landscape in a session on Managing risk in an uncertain world: Learning from catastrophes on the morning of Tuesday 24 April.

In his MORO presentation, Global change and catastrophic loss, Glenn will speak about the increasing challenges faced by various stakeholders – most particularly governments and insurers – in managing risks associated with severe weather and seismic events. He will discuss how severe weather losses are rising across Canada and around the world and what can be expected through the next decade in terms of disaster loss claims and prevention. He will end with a discussion on ICLR’s work and its efforts to help insurers and others mitigate the impact of severe weather and earthquake events.

The biennial MORO conference combines world-class speaker presentations, panel sessions, networking and the opportunity to write reinsurance business. The MORO attracts the elite leaders of the global reinsurance industry and is the cooperative and mutual insurance sector’s only global dedicated reinsurance conference. The conference is an outstanding opportunity for mutuals and cooperatives to share reinsurance knowledge and discuss issues of common interest in a collaborative and supportive environment. In 2016, the event was headlined by Inga Beale, CEO, Lloyd’s of London and 110 reinsurance managers from 54 companies in 25 countries gathered in London to learn from and to do business with each other.

The event will also feature speakers from global organisations including Willis Re, A.M. Best and CyberScout. A number of prominent Canadian companies will also be included in the agenda with speakers participating from ICMIF member companies The Co-operators and Desjardins General Insurance Group. Also appearing will be The Sovereign General Insurance Company (a member of The Co-operators Group of Companies).

ICMIF CEO, Shaun Tarbuck commented: “We are thrilled to have Glenn as a keynote speaker at this year’s MORO. As well as being an extremely strong speaker with a wealth of experience, he is a strong advocate for finding ways for insurers to help mitigate risks associated with climate change and other catastrophes”.
