Ayr Farmers Mutual Insurance Company, an ICMIF member in Canada, has announced a significant long-term investment in a local community facility, demonstrating how the company’s mutual insurance model drives the desire for sustained community impact.

Ayr Farmers Mutual has committed to a 40-year partnership with the Township of North Dumfries, securing naming rights for the Ayr Farmers Mutual Community Centre in Ontario. The annual investment of CAD 15,000 over 40 years represents a total investment of CAD 600,000, which will support the development of a net-zero twin-pad ice-skating arena and expanded community programming. Whilst, a 40-year commitment isn’t typical in today’s sponsorship landscape, for a mutual insurer like Ayr Farmers Mutual, it’s exactly the kind of long-term thinking the mutual business model enables.

The community centre serves more than 100,000 visits each year and will play a central role in meeting growing recreational demand in the region. The planned expansion, due for completion in 2027, will add a second energy-efficient ice arena and additional community spaces.

According to AFM President & CEO Jeff Whiting, the long-term commitment reflects the strengths of the mutual business model: “As a mutual and purpose-driven company, we’re not driven by shareholders or quarterly earnings – we’re driven by our policyholders and the communities they call home.”

Whiting continued: “That structure allows us to think differently about investment timelines. This 40-year commitment demonstrates what’s possible when mutuals leverage their unique business model to create lasting community impact. While we serve many communities across Southwestern Ontario, this partnership represents both our confidence in the region’s future and our responsibility to give back when we can.”

A model for mutual community investment

As a member-owned insurer, AFM is able to reinvest profits directly into initiatives that benefit members and their communities. While long-term sponsorships of this scale are uncommon, AFM’s approach highlights how mutual insurers can play an impactful role in supporting both local infrastructure and social wellbeing.

Sustainability alignment

Net-zero was a key factor in AFM’s decision to partner. As a company committed to environmental responsibility, AFM says supporting infrastructure that prioritises energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact aligns with its values.

Sue Foxton, Mayor of North Dumfries Township, welcomed the partnership, saying: “Major facilities draw people together. This is the heartbeat of our small but mighty town. Thank you Ayr Farmers Mutual, a company entwined in our history while building our future.”

The partnership builds on Ayr Farmers Mutual’s strong track record of community investment. In 2025 alone, the mutual supported more than 60 community organisations across Southwestern Ontario.

Founded in 1893, Ayr Farmers Mutual Insurance Company serves more than 11,000 policyholders and is a long-standing example of how the mutual insurance model continues to deliver tangible benefits for communities.
