Germany-based mutual insurer HUK-COBURG has reported the strongest financial performance in its history, with significant growth across its core lines and improved profitability.
Announcing its 2025 results, CEO Klaus-Jürgen Heitmann said: “2025 was the most successful year in the history of our company.”
The group increased gross written premiums by more than 10% to around EUR 11 billion, outperforming the wider market. Pre-tax profits nearly doubled to EUR 992 million, while net profits rose to EUR 621 million.
The performance is particularly notable given challenging conditions in the highly competitive and saturated motor insurance market, where rising repair costs and price sensitivity are putting pressure on margins.
“In view of the rising cost of living, customers are looking more and more at prices,” said Heitmann. “Despite premium increases… we have succeeded in continuing to be one of the cheapest providers in the market and at the same time improving our combined ratio… This means that we are earning money again in our core business.”
HUK-COBURG expanded its market-leading motor portfolio to 14.5 million insured vehicles while improving its combined ratio to 96.2% (from 101.7%), underlining a return to underwriting profitability.
The insurer also reported strong growth beyond motor, with rising demand for liability and household contents cover bringing total contracts in those lines to 8.9 million, alongside record new business across multiple lines.
As a mutual insurer, HUK-COBURG said its focus on being “good and affordable” continues to resonate with members and customers, supporting both retention and cross-selling in a cost-conscious environment.
The group further strengthened its financial position during the year and continues to invest in customer service and future mobility solutions. The group strengthened its financial position during the year, increasing its equalisation reserve to EUR 1 billion, while also investing in customer service, future mobility solutions, and service capacity including the creation of around 200 new jobs.
Looking ahead, HUK-COBURG is expanding beyond insurance into broader mobility services, aiming to deliver additional value to customers as the market evolves.
