Canadian ICMIF member The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group has been named a Five-Star Carrier in Insurance Business Canada magazine’s annual Five-Star Carriers report. The prestigious list spotlights the companies that have received the highest ratings in this year’s broker’s survey of insurance carriers nationwide by consistently providing top-notch service.

Insurance Business Canada asked hundreds of insurance brokers from across Canada to rate their carriers on a scale of 1 (poor) to 10 (excellent) across eight categories, from underwriting expertise and quick quotes to competitive rates and claims processing. The highest-scoring companies – 24 in total, up from 16 last year – were awarded five-star designations. Moreover, The Commonwell is one of only four companies that earned five-star status in every single category this year, receiving the honour of being named All-Star Carrier.

The name ‘The Commonwell’ represents the relationship between the company; its brokers, agents and policyholders; and the common ground they share in Ontario, Canada. Like the ‘common well’ of the past that bonded members of the community with a social gathering place and a source of sustenance, The Commonwell embodies support for the communities it serves. To best serve its broker partners, The Commonwell has significantly driven enhancements focused on the ease of doing business – both in technology and in decision-making processes. One example is the company’s COVID-19 response, which involved sending every member household CAD 100 to use to as needed or pay it forward if they were in a position to do so. The effort was a way to help further build community and involved no extra work for the company’s broker partners.

“We consistently enhance our contact and response abilities to better service calls and remain consistent in our approach to business,” says Tim Shauf, President and CEO of The Commonwell. “To continue to excel and meet the needs of our clients, we strive to stay the course and look for new and creative ways to stay connected and be responsive – both with regard to COVID-19 and our day-to-day operations.”

Other ICMIF members meet and exceed brokers’ expectations

As well as The Commonwell, three other Canadian ICMIF members were rated as Five-Star Carriers in various categories in Insurance Business Canada’s 2020 survey of insurance brokers.

  • Trillium Mutual was rated as a Five-Star Carrier in five categories: commitment to the broker distribution channel; underwriting expertise; competitive rates; claims processing; and quick quotes.
  • Wawanesa Insurance achieved the highest rating in two categories: commitment to the broker distribution channel; and underwriting expertise
  • and Sovereign Insurance, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Co-operators, was also recognised as a leading carrier in two categories: underwriting expertise and claims processing.
