The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) has officially announced the theme for this year’s International Day of Cooperatives (CoopsDay): “Cooperatives: Driving inclusive and sustainable solutions for a better world.” The 2025 CoopsDay will be celebrated on Saturday 5 July 2025, and will serve as a key milestone in the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives (IYC2025).

The International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF), as the insurance sectoral body for the ICA, is proud to support and promote this year’s theme, which highlights the vital role of cooperative enterprise in building resilient, inclusive and sustainable communities worldwide. ICMIF is actively engaged in IYC2025 activities and continues to champion the impact of cooperative and mutual insurers within the global cooperative movement.

A pivotal moment for cooperatives globally

CoopsDay 2025 comes at a time of heightened global challenges—from climate change and economic uncertainty to growing inequality. This year’s theme underscores how cooperatives are uniquely positioned to deliver people-centered, democratic, and sustainable solutions.

The theme also aligns with key international policy efforts, including:

  • The Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2), which will address social inclusion, poverty eradication and sustainable development and where the Cooperatives and Mutuals Leadership Circle (CM50) will present a Charter and a Commitment Plan on how to expand the cooperative and mutual sector globally.
  • The UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), which will review progress on several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Across sectors—from insurance and finance to agriculture, health and housing—cooperatives continue to demonstrate that a values-based business model can offer practical and impactful solutions to some of today’s most pressing issues.

“Across the globe, cooperatives are demonstrating that a values-driven enterprise approach can deliver real and lasting solutions,” said Jeroen Douglas, Director General of the ICA. “International Day of Cooperatives 2025 is a moment to recognize this collective strength and reaffirm our dedication to an inclusive and sustainable path forward.”
