Japanese ICMIF member Zenkyoren (National Mutual Insurance Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives) has become the sole investor in a EUR 90 million 7-year Sustainable Development Bond issued by the World Bank (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development – IBRD).

The bond, rated AAA/Aaa, was issued on 9 September 2025 and is due in September 2032. It has been issued under the IBRD’s Sustainable Development Bond Framework.

Funds raised through the bond will be allocated to projects aimed at reducing natural disaster risks in developing countries, with a particular focus on strengthening environmental resilience to climate change. Supported initiatives are expected to include the development of agricultural infrastructure and irrigation systems.

Zenkyoren says the investment reflects its commitment to responsible asset management that contributes to the sustainable development of agriculture and local communities, while fulfilling its wider social role as a member of regional society.

Through this investment, Zenkyoren expects to support progress towards several key UN Sustainable Development Goals, including:

  • SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.
  • SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure: building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation.
  • SDG 13 – Climate Action: taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Zenkyoren says it will continue to integrate sustainability considerations into its investment activities as part of its broader mission to support agriculture, local communities, and societal resilience.
