From intent to outcome – The strategic AI agenda for mutual/cooperative insurers

As the insurance industry moves beyond experimentation, mutual and cooperative insurers are increasingly focused on translating AI ambition into enterprise-wide impact. While many organisations have developed promising pilots and proofs of concept, achieving full-scale implementation remains a challenge, limiting the broader returns these technologies can deliver. This session explores how ICMIF members can move from intent to outcome by scaling AI across their organisations while strengthening operational performance, revenue opportunities, and member engagement. It will also examine the growing importance of agentic AI and its potential to reshape operational models across the industry.

Key topics to be discussed include:

  • Scaling AI from pilots to enterprise adoption, including best practices, change management, and strategies to extend value across organisations and regulatory environments.
  • Driving operational efficiency and revenue generation, using generative and agentic AI to streamline workflows, support advisors, reduce administrative burden, and improve customer and member engagement.
  • Preparing for the next wave of AI innovation, building AI-ready organisations with strong data foundations, governance frameworks, and workforce capabilities while safeguarding trust and the human-centred principles of mutuality.

SPEAKERS:

  • Patrice Amann, Regional Industry Leader – EMEA Insurance & Banking, Microsoft (France) & Dr Dorota Zimnoch, Global Industry Advisor for Financial Services, Microsoft (UK)

Scaling AI in practice

Small group discussions* will provide an open space for peer exchange, enabling participants to share experiences of how AI capabilities are being implemented and scaled across their organisations. Groups will be segmented to bring together organisations with similar organisational structures and operating contexts. The format encourages trusted and honest dialogue on successful use cases, strategic adoption, and change management, allowing participants to discuss progress, shared challenges, and lessons learned while gaining practical insights from peers.

Plenary session

AI in action – Practical implementations and lessons from mutual/cooperative insurers

This session showcases case studies from ICMIF member organisations on applying AI to modernise operations, strengthen distribution, and deliver more proactive value to members. Presentations will highlight practical examples of how mutual and cooperative insurers are embedding AI across the insurance value chain, converting strategic intent into measurable business outcomes. Speakers will share their experiences of implementation across claims, underwriting, servicing, and direct distribution, demonstrating how responsible adoption, strong governance, and human oversight ensure technology enhances rather than replaces the member relationships at the heart of the mutual model.

Key topics to be discussed include:

  • Real-world AI deployments across the insurance value chain, with case studies demonstrating applications in underwriting, claims, servicing, distribution, and risk management to improve efficiency and risk insight.
  • Implementation lessons from mutual and cooperative insurers, including operating models, governance, sequencing of initiatives, and practical insights into what has worked, what has not, and how organisations are overcoming barriers to adoption.
  • Balancing innovation with trust and responsibility, examining how insurers manage operational, governance, and reputational risks while ensuring AI strengthens member engagement and upholds the principles of mutuality.

SPEAKERS:

  • Martin Björkman, Head of Data Science, Länsförsäkringar (Sweden)
  • Jeroen Heerspink, Innovation Manager, Univé (Netherlands)
  • Diego Pasini, Head of Organisation & AI Program Leader, Unipol (Italy)
