PRESS RELEASE

EMC Insurance Companies to welcome over 80 (re)insurance leaders to the ICMIF Meeting of Reinsurance Officials this week

Manchester (UK) – Monday 5 June 2023: This week, over 80 leaders from the global mutual and cooperative insurance sector will meet in Des Moines, Iowa (USA) for the 2023 International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF) Meeting of Reinsurance Officials (MORO).

ICMIF is the global association for cooperative and mutual insurers. As a membership organisation, the Federation’s mission is to help its member companies achieve their strategic goals and sustainably grow in their local markets and one of its main conferences is the ICMIF Meeting of Reinsurance Officials (MORO). The 2023 MORO will be hosted by its member EMC Insurance Companies at its corporate headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa (USA) from Tuesday 6 to Thursday 8 June.

The MORO is a unique, global gathering of insurance and reinsurance professionals from the mutual and cooperative sector that normally meets every two years. The conference is an outstanding opportunity for ICMIF members to share (re)insurance knowledge and discuss issues of common interest with their peers from around the world in a collaborative and supportive environment.

This year’s conference will see 80+ delegates from more than 30 organisations across 17 countries attend the event. The three-day event will include high level presentations, discussion panels and one-to-one meetings, with a unique focus on how current and emerging (re)insurance issues affect mutual and cooperative insurers.

Topics discussed at the event will include:

  • Climate, claims and catastrophe modelling
  • ESG and resilience in (re)insurance
  • Emerging risks
  • Innovation and insurtech
  • Cyber (re)insurance

The keynote address will be given by Anne Cope, Chief Engineer, Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS, USA).

Shaun Tarbuck, Chief Executive, ICMIF said: “ICMIF members make up a unique, trusted network of likeminded people and organisations that are willing to support each other in defining points of difference and collaborating on opportunities where we can make meaningful impact. The global ICMIF network creates the opportunity to help maintain resilience in our organisations and this year’s MORO will enable our members to learn from each other’s successes and challenges in a wide variety of areas of their respective organisations’ business strategies with a specific focus on reinsurance.”

Mike Ashurst, Vice-President, Reinsurance and Professional Development, ICMIF said: “At the beginning of this year, the reinsurance market faced one of the most difficult, frustrating and complex renewals in recent history, with significant price increases and changes in terms and conditions across many lines and territories. Inflation, the war in Ukraine and climate change risks have all contributed to such a difficult renewal. With this backdrop, it is more vital than ever for ICMIF member organisations to support each other, and the MORO provides a perfect opportunity to do this.”

Ashurst continued: “We are very grateful to Scott Jean, President and CEO of EMC Insurance Companies and his team for hosting the 2023 MORO at their headquarters. Their support has been invaluable in the planning and organisation of this event. Our thanks to all involved.”

Scott Jean, President and CEO of EMC Insurance Companies said: “The MORO provides an outstanding opportunity to share key industry knowledge with peers from across the globe. We feel very fortunate to host this year’s conference at our corporate headquarters here in Des Moines—one of the strongest and most innovative insurance communities in the world. A big thank you to ICMIF for the opportunity and for their partnership. We know it will be an enlightening and inspiring few days.”
