This year marks a major milestone for one of Australia’s most trusted mutual medical defence organisations, as ICMIF member MDA National celebrates 100 years of supporting and protecting doctors across the country.
Founded in 1925 by a group of Western Australian doctors, MDA National has grown from a small mutual support group into a national organisation, now trusted by over 46,000 members. The organisation continues to be wholly doctor-owned and operated, staying true to its original purpose: to support and protect members and promote good medical practice.
Over the past century, MDA National has played a pivotal role in helping members navigate medico-legal challenges, offering personalised advice, professional indemnity cover, and advocacy – all within a mutual model that prioritises doctors’ needs over profits.
“It’s a proud moment for everyone connected to MDA National,” said Tim Plant, Chief Executive Officer. “For 100 years, we’ve been a constant source of support for Australia’s medical professionals. That’s a legacy built on trust, stewardship and mutual commitment – and one we intend to carry forward.”
Key moments in the organisation’s history include:
- Becoming Australia’s first claims-made medical defence organisation in 1997
- Transforming into a national provider in 2000 to serve doctors across all states and territories
- Maintaining financial resilience through the early 2000s indemnity crisis—without calling on members for additional funds
Throughout its history, MDA National has focused on evolving with the medical profession, offering services and resources that reflect the realities of modern practice. These include targeted education, proactive risk management, and responsive member support tailored to the demands of today’s regulatory and clinical environment.
In recent years, the organisation has also taken meaningful steps toward future-focused priorities, including digital transformation, a commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives, and the launch of a Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan.
“While our purpose has remained the same, how we deliver on it continues to evolve,” added Tim Plant. “We’re investing in better technology, stronger partnerships, and the leadership development of the next generation of doctors.”
The centenary is being marked by a series of internal and external celebrations, including a renewal campaign recognising long-standing members, and reflection on the organisation’s history and future direction.
As MDA National enters its second century, its mutual values – Courage, Care and Commitment – remain firmly at the heart of everything it does.
