When I signed up for the ICMIF Advanced Management Course, I was looking forward to a week of learning and reflection – but what I found exceeded my expectations. It was one of the most thoughtful and practically useful programmes I have attended, and I came away with both fresh insights and new energy for my work.
Learning that combines models with human understanding
I have always loved models. They help us structure complex challenges and think clearly. But during the week in Manchester, I was reminded that models alone are not enough. To use them well, you need to understand how people work – how we think, decide, and interact as individuals and groups.
That blend of science-based content and practical psychology was, for me, one of the most powerful aspects of the course. The sessions on how the human brain works, how we make decisions, and how our perceptions shape our judgements were fascinating. I particularly appreciated that the ideas were grounded in research – it’s the kind of material that appeals to me because it helps explain not just what to do, but why it works.
Inspiration from across the ICMIF network
Another highlight was hearing from ICMIF member organisations around the world. Those short video clips and examples of how others are living the mutual and cooperative purpose were deeply inspiring – they connected the course content to the real world of our sector. I would have loved to see even more of them! They made me want to reach out to some of those speakers and continue the conversation.
A structure that keeps you energised
The structure of the course was excellent – short bursts of content, followed by reflection and group discussion, then a break. It kept the energy level high and made it easy to stay focused. I never once felt tired or lost in theory, which says a lot for a five-day programme.
The facilitators also played a big part in that. They struck the right balance between insight and humour, theory and experience, and were open and personal in their approach – which helped the rest of us open up too.
Applying the learning back home
I came home with ideas I could use immediately. In our monthly Executive Live, I talked about how our brains influence our decisions and shared reflections from the course. I also talked about two phrases that have stayed with me:
- “Diagnose before action” – a powerful reminder to pause and think before jumping to solutions.
- “Eternal renewal and endless perspective” – which, for me, perfectly captures what it means to be a mutual organisation focused on long-term purpose, not short-term gains.
We’ve even started applying some of the course techniques in our management meetings – for example, giving people a few minutes to think and note down their own ideas before starting a group discussion. It really helps to make sure all voices are heard.
The power of connection
Beyond the learning itself, what made the week so special was the people. The atmosphere was warm and supportive, and it was remarkable how close we became as a group in such a short time. The dinners, the conversations, even the karaoke night – all of it helped to build trust and genuine friendships.
It reminded me that leadership development isn’t only about learning frameworks or strategies – it’s also about connecting as human beings.
A course that stays with you
Looking back, the Advanced Management Course gave me both inspiration and practical tools that I continue to use. It deepened my understanding of leadership, human nature, and what it means to work for a mutual organisation.
Most of all, it reminded me of the value of learning together – of sharing ideas, experiences, and laughter with people who are as passionate about the mutual model as I am.
