This year Argentina holds the presidency of the G20 and, thanks to the growing recognition of insurance as a social protection mechanism to promote financial and economic stability and growth, there will be an Insurance Forum take place this year for the first time ever at a G20 Summit. The G20 Insurance Forum will take place in September 2018 in Bariloche, Patagonia (Argentina).

Personally convinced of the positive role of insurance, Juan Pazo, Superintendent of Insurance for Argentina, worked hard to convince his government and G20 leaders that a specific event dedicated to insurance should be organised. Since then ICMIF and the Geneva Association have worked closely together to produce an agenda for the event. ICMIF members Sancor Seguros, La Segunda and ADIRA have all supported the project and will help to host the Forum.

Speaking about the G20 Insurance Forum, Shaun Tarbuck, Chief Executive, ICMIF said: “Here at ICMIF we strongly believe in the role of insurance to face global challenges, and we have high hopes that this initiative will be a historical milestone for insurance supervision, legislation and the insurance industry.  Discussions related to sustainable development, barriers for long-term investment in infrastructure, technological innovation, and financial stability, cannot be fully addressed without the voice of the insurance sector. The industry is a key stakeholder for addressing many challenges, not only through the development of innovative products to improve economic resilience, but also as a catalyst for resources towards common goals.”

“The overall objective is to present the G20 leaders with the role of insurers as solution providers to some of the most pressing problems facing the world today.  We will illustrate the important role of insurance by showing concrete ways how the insurance industry can provide solutions based on sound insurance principles,” Tarbuck concluded.

The aims of a G20 Insurance Forum will be:

  • The promotion of long-term investment in infrastructure
  • Building resilient economies
  • Facing digital disruption
  • Globalisation of business – in particular reinsurance

Ten ICMIF member CEOs have been invited to take part in the agenda which will also include leading industry figures such as Jonathon Dixon, Secretary General, IAIS; Joaquim Levy, Managing Director and CFO of the World Bank; and Inga Beale, CEO, Lloyd’s of London.

There will also be an open invitation for all ICMIF members attend the Forum in September in Argentina.
