ICMIF member NFU Mutual (UK) has been named as the only Which? Recommended Provider for home insurance in 2023, with the consumer champion calling the rural insurer the nation’s best home insurance provider.

To find the best home insurers in the UK, Which? surveyed thousands of customers and analysed 78 policies.

“Providers that are rated highly by customers who have recently claimed – and which also offer reliable cover as standard – receive the Which? Recommended Provider award,” said the consumer advocate. This year, only NFU Mutual, made the cut – although another UK mutual, LV= was very close to achieving the same recommendation.

As well as beating all the competition assessed by Which? for its home insurance product, NFU Mutual was again named a Which? Recommended Provider for car insurance and has retained its Defaqto 5 Star Rating across its home and motor insurance products.

Which? Recommended Provider status is awarded based on a mix of Which?’s assessment benchmarks and customer scores and survey responses, with products independently selected by the consumer champion. The best companies across these measures are awarded Recommended Provider status.

Defaqto ratings are based on independent research conducted throughout the year by financial services industry experts, with the best quality products awarded a 5 Star Rating.

NFU Mutual’s home and motor insurance have seen the insurer awarded Which? Recommended Provider status for the past decade, as well as being consistently given a 5 Star Rating by Defaqto.

Reacting to the news, Rachel Kelsall, incoming Customer Services Director at NFU Mutual, said: “As a leading mutual insurer, we stand up for our members and what matters most to them, not shareholders. We are delighted that this commitment to excellent service has once again been recognised by customers and independent experts.

“Insurance should be personal and transparent, so we make sure customers can discuss their needs with a real person, face-to-face or on the phone, and don’t charge extra fees for adjustment, cancellation or for customers paying monthly by Direct Debit.

“This means customers can budget ahead safe in the knowledge that a change in circumstance will not come with a hefty insurance admin fee, and that if they do need to claim they will be well looked after.

“Drawing on over a century of experience as a mutual insurer with presence in communities across the country, we offer our members a wealth of knowledge with an attentive, local service.

“Good service also means helping preventing damage in the first place, so we aim to empower customers to protect their property from damage through initiatives like sponsoring police activities or raising awareness of rural crime.

“And when they do come to claim, we pride ourselves on offering a first-class, empathetic service which is reflected in these ratings. We believe the true value of our product is reflected in the fact that over 95% of our customers choose to renew with NFU Mutual,” Kelsall concluded.
