ICMIF member Thrivent (USA) recently demonstrated its commitment to purpose-driven business through the announcement of its sponsorship of the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, supporting athletes, volunteers and community initiatives during one of the largest sporting events for people with disabilities in the United States.

The financial services organisation was a sponsor of the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, which welcomed nearly 3,000 athletes, more than 75,000 spectators and around 10,000 volunteers when they took place in Minnesota from 20 to 26 June.

“The Special Olympics USA Games is about connection, resilience and showing the world what’s possible when people come together,” said Carolyn Sakstrup, Chief Growth & Generosity Officer at Thrivent. “This partnership is a natural fit for Thrivent because it shows how we put our purpose into action – empowering lives of service and faith. We’re honored to support these incredible athletes and the volunteers who make it all possible, helping create moments of joy, belonging and impact that last long after the closing ceremony.”

As part of its involvement, Thrivent served as presenting sponsor of Fan Fest, the week-long public celebration which took place alongside the Games, offering interactive activities and community experiences for athletes, families and spectators.

The organisation also led a volunteer generosity initiative in the athlete village, where athletes and volunteers created fleece blankets and greetings cards for Fleece and Thank You, a nonprofit organisation that supports children undergoing extended hospital treatment.

More than 200 Thrivent employees volunteered during the Games, reflecting the organisation’s wider commitment to community service and employee engagement. One Thrivent team member, an avid volunteer, was especially proud to support the Special Olympics. Her son, Mitchell, is an athlete who has found community and purpose through the Games – watch his inspiring story here.

The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games were the first to be held in Minnesota for more than 30 years, providing an opportunity to celebrate inclusion, resilience and the power of communities working together.
