In addition to celebrating its centenary in 2026, ICMIF member Goodville Mutual (USA) has just been recognised for the 17th consecutive year among the top 50 property and casualty insurers in the United States through the Ward’s 50® list. The dual milestone highlights both the company’s century-long commitment to its communities and its continued financial strength and performance.

Founded in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Goodville Mutual was established by a small group of Mennonite men who recognised the growing need for automobile insurance and the importance of supporting one another in times of loss. Built on the principle of mutual aid and “bearing one another’s burdens”, the company has remained rooted in these values while expanding to serve a wider community.

The origins of the insurer date back to 22 July 1926, when its first meeting was held to explore the creation of a mutual aid group to cover auto liability. Inspired by local mutual fire companies – themselves part of a long tradition linked to volunteer fire services pioneered by Benjamin Franklin – the founders sought to create a system of shared protection for their community.

From these beginnings, Goodville Mutual has grown steadily while maintaining its commitment to its founding ethos. Today, the insurer provides property and casualty coverage for homes, farms, churches and small businesses across eight US states, working exclusively through independent insurance agents.

The company’s century-long history is underpinned by a strong record of financial stability and performance. With annual revenues exceeding USD 182 million and assets surpassing USD 405 million, Goodville Mutual holds an A (Excellent) rating from ICMIF Supporting Member AM Best. In 2026, the company was once again recognised among the top 50 property and casualty insurers in the United States, earning a place on the Ward’s 50® list for the 17th consecutive year.

The Ward’s 50® recognition, awarded by Ward Benchmarking (part of Aon), evaluates nearly 3,000 property and casualty insurers across the United States based on objective measures of safety, consistency and financial performance. Goodville Mutual’s continued inclusion among these leading insurers reflects the strength of its business model and its long-term commitment to serving members.

“We are honoured to be recognized again on the Ward’s 50® Property and Casualty Companies list,” said David Gautsche, President and CEO of Goodville Mutual. “This distinction is a testament to the consistent hard work, sound decision-making, and member-focused service demonstrated by our entire Goodville Mutual team and our partner agencies. We are grateful to Ward Benchmarking and Aon for this recognition and proud to continue earning the trust of those we serve.”

In addition to its growth and achievements, Goodville Mutual continues to place strong emphasis on its mission to serve policyholders and communities. The organisation says it operates according to biblical principles of love, justice and integrity, prioritising customer service, loss prevention and long-term relationships with policyholders, agents and employees. It also contributes a portion of its operating profits to charitable causes and follows a socially responsible investment strategy, supporting companies that improve quality of life.

This commitment to community remains as relevant today as it was a century ago, when the company was founded to support neighbours in times of need.

Looking to the future, Goodville Mutual is continuing to invest in its operations and service capabilities. In 2025, the insurer marked a milestone with a ceremonial groundbreaking for the expansion of its headquarters in New Holland, Pennsylvania. The project, expected to be completed in 2026, will increase office capacity and support the company’s continued growth while enhancing service for members and agents.

As Goodville Mutual celebrates its 100-year anniversary, it reflects on a legacy defined not only by longevity, but by the trust it has built with members, agents and communities over generations. Its continued recognition for financial strength and performance demonstrates how a purpose-driven mutual model can deliver lasting value while remaining true to its founding principles.
